The portrayal of men and women has varied in different stories throughout history. Many portray women as beautiful, deceptive, manipulative, and smart, while men are portrayed as being strong, masculine, and easily tricked. In many of the works covered in the course â€Å"Major British Writers to 1800,† men are advised to refrain from acting lustful, believed that it would harm their overall ability to succeed in whatever the characters aimed to do. An example of this is seen in â€Å"Sir Gawain and the Green Knight† when Gawain is deceived by Lady Bertilak in an effort to prove that Sir Gawain is imperfect. The depictions of men and women are very similar in Fantomina by Eliza Haywood, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Phyllis and Aristotle. .†¦show more content†¦While Sir Gawain was nearly beheaded as was Aristotle in their stories, the result of the deception by Fantomina was an unplanned pregnancy. I feel that Haywood shows morality in this result becau se, unlike other works, the man is not punished for being deceived, with the only real trouble of Beauplaisir being that he knows of the existence of his child, which is an internal punishment for his actions. Beauplaisir being unpunished and having his name remain untarnished while Fantomina was sent to a monastery with her child is an example of how Haywood remained consistent with the portrayal of other works in regards to male and female portrayal while also distinguishing herself and her work from other works. The portrayal of women in Milton’s Paradise Lost is very different from the other works. While women are often seen as being deceitful, devious, and smart, the depiction of Eve is different as she is seen as being dumber and more inferior to Adam in all areas besides beauty. This portrayal of Eve assisted in the progression of Paradise Lost as Eve ate the forbidden apple after being persuaded by Satan to eat the apple. While the incident caused Adam to also disobey God, it created a bond between Adam and Eve that was greater than before the incident when they were considered pure. America has advanced socially in regards to sexual equality since the birth of the nation. There have been many advances in society, especially for women despite these advancements, there continues to be inequalities in sexual â€Å"equality† .Why does a wage difference exists between men and women? Are employers being sexist? Sexism has been a problem since the beginning of mankind. Women have struggled to achieve equality with men. The male dominated culture has led the female gender to become the â€Å"weaker sex†. This discrimination, of course, based on the stereotype that women should be stay at home playing the role of the typical house wife. It wasn’t even until the 19th Amendment passed in 1919 that allowed women to vote. Even sex†¦show more content†¦So if this is the problem shouldnt the wage of a male teacher be the same as the one as a female teacher? This is not the case.Male public school teachers earn between 10 to 13 percent more than f emales, on average, and a little more than half of this difference is accounted for by differences in the characteristics of male and female teachers(Gruber,1996).This proves that the reason for the difference in wages is not the fact that women choose low paying jobs but because of the gender difference. Gruber also mentioned that, â€Å" married females receive lower salaries than non married females, while for males, no difference associated with marital status is identified, all else equal.† If the choice of the women really had to do with her pay then why doesn t the male teacher get affected? In this case of both of them being teachers both of them should be getting payed the same amount. As said by Dr. Golding,â€Å"There is a belief, which is just not true, that women are just in bad occupations and if we just put them in better occupations, we would solve the gender gap problem,†(Miller,2014). By saying this she states that the reason there is a difference in wages is not because of the choices in jobs but rather other sexist reasons. Then, as a soldier barks, telling the others to place on the gas masks. By using words such as â€Å" ecstasy,† â€Å"fumbling,† and â€Å"clumsy,† Owen touches the reader’s emotion by depicting an action that is intense because this movement of the soldiers will either mean life or a slow, painful death. Also, the punctuation that is present produces an envisionment of an officer barking at the younger, less experienced troops, telling the soldiers to put on the masks over the words â€Å"GAS! Gas! Before the splurge of excitement and the dying of a soldier, the same group of men were already suffering from the effects of war as depicted previously in the poem. The picture of death Owen conveys among the unlucky soldier is done through the use of imagery and metaphor. The depiction of the sadness of war Owen coins among the unlucky soldiers is completed through the use of punctuation and charged words from â€Å"Many lost their boots but limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of disappointed shells that dropped behind. †By employing punctuation to illustrate the slow and trudging group of men. With every punctuation within the lines of poetry, the punctuation characterizes a pause in the soldiers’ walking as they prepare for the next seemingly endless step through the sludge in the trenches. Also, the charged words such as â€Å"limped,† â€Å"lame,† and â€Å"deaf,† allow the reader to put envision what it was like to be in a soldiers’ boots and experience the true colors of war; sadness and despair. The image shows the condition of the group of soldiers as well as the landscape the soldiers call home. By employing the literary devices of punctuation and charged words, Owen gives the reader an envisionment of the group of men and the tolls of war. Through Owen’s choice of literary devices, Owen successfully portrays excitement, death, and sadness to the reader and without these images, Owen could not have conveyed the irony in the phrase â€Å"Dulce Et Decorum Est. † The portraits of the soldiers equipped with gas masks, the dying soldier, and the condition of the troops show the true colors of war, which is what Owen was attempting to convey throughout the poem.

The first book is called The Man Who Changed the World- The lives of Mikhail S. Gorbachev by Gail Sheehy. The second is Perestroika- New Thinking for Our Country and the World by Mikhail Gorbachev. Gail Sheehys book is a biography of Gorbachev from birth until present times, and it really helps in understanding the second book, Perestroika, which is about Gorbachevs political policies that turned the Soviet Union upside down. These books complement each other very well. The Man Who Changed the World is a well-covered look at Gorbachevs life- his roots, his early life, and how he rose into power. It gives some reasoning as to why he is not the typical Russian Communist Party leader. The most startling fact I discovered about Gorbachev is that he is not technically Russian. Both sets of his grandparents were Ukrainian Cossacks. Cossacks were much like the pilgrims were to early America. The Cossacks were groups of people who had escaped from oppressive conditions and migrated north in search of religious and political freedoms. Gorbachev had rebel blood from the very beginning- and was far from the typical submissive Russian peasant farmer. These people formed their own towns and tried to become self-sufficient in Russias mother-land in the south. He was born in 1931, during the heart of the Great Depression, and during some of the worst times that Russia was to experience.
